Why Normal Fasting Glucose Doesn't Mean You're Metabolically Healthy

A deep dive into why fasting insulin and postprandial glucose are far better early predictors of metabolic dysfunction than a standard fasting glucose test.

The Lagging Indicator

A standard medical checkup usually includes a fasting blood glucose test. If it reads 85 mg/dL, you are told everything is fine. Unfortunately, fasting glucose is a lagging indicator. By the time it rises out of the normal range, significant metabolic damage has already occurred over the previous 5 to 10 years.

The Role of Fasting Insulin

The body is incredibly resilient. As you become slightly insulin resistant, your pancreas simply pumps out more insulin to force the glucose into your cells, keeping your fasting glucose perfectly normal. This state is called hyperinsulinemia. Testing for fasting insulin can reveal metabolic dysfunction up to a decade before fasting glucose begins to climb.

Postprandial (Post-Meal) Glucose

Another crucial, often ignored metric is postprandial glucose—your blood sugar level 1 to 2 hours after a meal. This is the first system to break down. You may have a perfect fasting glucose of 85, but if your blood sugar spikes to 160 mg/dL after a bowl of rice and stays there for hours, you are already well on the path to pre-diabetes. This is why continuous tracking with Predinex is vital for true preventative care.
